A book that explains various tools and techniques necessary for successfully building models with brass, now in its second edition with a new chapter on shipbuilding. Whether substituting for an existing plastic model kit part or assembly, making a master pattern for casting, or creating a complete scratch-built model, the range of brass fabrication methods and tools used are explained. Readers are exposed to techniques for cutting, forming, fabricating, soldering, and final finishing of commercially available brass stock. Specific chapters focus on the use of various processes and chemicals to assist readers in the creation of very detailed brass models. World master model builder Ken Foran has created a book that modelers of all skill levels will find to be an absorbing and valuable resource for successfully building with brass.

Ken Foran lives in Morro Bay, California, and has a B.F.A. in industrial design. Like many, he built model kits as a youth, and as his skills and desire to go beyond the basic kits evolved, he started scratch building with brass as a substitute material for plastic. Brass afforded greater strength for smaller assemblies, and with soldering brass quicker build times were achieved not having to wait for glue to set. Several of his WWI aircraft have been exhibited at the International Toy Fair in Nuremburg, Germany; the Model Engineering Show, London, England, and at model engineering shows in the USA. Ken was a guest speaker at the 2016 Nautical Research Guild’s annual conference in San Diego.

I’ve been building models for over 65 years and co-founded Model Motorcars 21 years ago. That should make me somewhat of an expert! Reading Ken Foran’s new book “Model Building with Brass” was a pure joy! He has captured the art and craftsmanship of model building in word and photograph…and what photos! 320 of them. The book is written with such clarity that even the novice builder will understand. Ken takes you through the process of building (some brass components of his) beautiful 1911 Model T Racer…and, it’s a great ride! However, before the ride, he explains the different materials, tools and techniques he will use. What I found most interesting is many of these techniques could be applied to plastic model building as well. Ken Foran’s ‘Model Building with Brass’ will be equally at home in your workshop or on your coffee table. -Marvin Meit
