Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (Atglen, PA) is a family-owned publisher with over 5,700 titles in print and a broad catalog of books, including non-fiction books on art, decorative arts, architecture, design, antiques, military history, maritime, photography, fashion, house and garden, food, history, crafts, woodworking, regional, and more. Located on the Schiffer Book Farm near the Chester/Lancaster county line, we are two miles from the Parkesburg station on Amtrak's Keystone Line.

 

                               Customer Service Representative

Description: Looking for a friendly communicator who is detailed oriented with strong organizational skills and initiative to join our team as a first point of contact for our customers, authors, and partners by answering incoming calls with integrity and providing a positive and professional experience. Throughout the day you will process incoming orders, manage customer relationships, answering product and service questions, and solve problems in a courteous and professional manner to give each caller or visitor the highest quality of service. Other responsibilities are to work closely with and support the customer service team and other departments on internal projects, manage inventory, archiving, and ensure accurate product data with our customers. This is an office position that works with our customers, authors, and internal teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Answer phones professionally and with respect
  • Forward, answer, or process emails received to main email address, website and voicemail
  • Manage inbound communications
  • Check voicemail (Rotate weeks within the department)
  • Process orders including those faxed, emailed, mailed, internal, and EDI
  • EDI – Pull orders, confirm, edit and update in Vendor Central for Amazon
  • Process credit card orders daily and transmit credit card payments
  • Print, sort, and deliver orders to the Warehouse
  • Process returns
  • Credit Application – process/check/approve
  • Maintain up-to-date records and contact information for customers and authors
  • Schedule containers delivery with freight forwarder
  • Create Records for new books and manage all books in inventory management system
  • Release Backorders
  • Communicate new releases to each external rep, and in-house team member
  • Prepare spreadsheets for external reps and in-house team to alert them of new titles arriving
  • Barnes and Noble Spreadsheets
  • Update product metadata management to customers
  • Upload images to Amazon, Schiffer, Barnes and Noble and Edelweiss
  • Keep warehouse inventory up to date/accurate
  • Month-End processing of orders and inventory
  • Transfer books’ design files to Master Archive
  • Manage product data
  • Catalog Requests and Weekly catalog mailing
  • Complete any projects given to them by the Customer Care Manager

Desired Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Previous experience in Customer Service preferred
  • Good Communication Skills
  • Able to work independently, as well as work with the team
  • Microsoft Office application experience a plus

Knowledge and skills:

  • Detail oriented; able to work fast paced with minimal mistakes
  • Strong level of organization; able to manage time and prioritize tasks
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Good verbal communication
  • Multi-tasking is a must

Physical Requirements:

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting/standing)
  • This person in the position needs to move inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • This person will need to be able to interact with the warehouse and be able to a pull a book if needed.

                               Production Assistant

Description: Responsibilities include the oversight for the end-to-end print production process as the liaison and first point of contact with the printers and other vendors from the initial specification requirements and pricing through the coordination of manufacturing and distribution to the publishers warehouse.
A typical day consists of meeting with the internal team (design, editorial) to understand the scope and production requirements of new and reprint project, confirm materials and production specifications, create production quotations and distribute to multiple printers for pricing. Then compare pricing to meet budget, negotiate and finalize price, use cost-benefit analysis to determine the best source for the job. Coordinate scheduling with the vendors, oversee file transfer, coordinate proofing and making corrections, insure integrity of design and creation, issue purchase orders, give final approval for print production, trouble shoot and problem solve issues, plan freight and logistics to deliver books to publishers warehouse, communicate with internal team and vendors regarding production stages and project status.
This is an in office position to work directly with our internal team.

Expectations:

  • Manage the end-to-end production and printing process, from handling vendor relations and negotiations, pricing, troubleshooting, scheduling, finding cost-savings opportunities in the production supply chain, and ensuring high quality of our products.
  • Responsible for maintaining relationships with current suppliers, as well as qualifying new vendors.
  • Efficiently manage print production schedule to ensure projects meet release dates
  • Serve as final reviewer of materials, including QA of printers’ proofs, and other products as may be needed.
  • Handle all technical issues between editorial and design, send files, proofing, tracking of materials and proofs, request production templates, coordinate samples
  • Ensure all information is supplied to the Printer
  • Coordinate resolution of production issues between editorial, design, and printer
  • Production of quoting titles, special projects, price adjustments, data entry, specs and pricing
  • Selection and confirmation of materials and processes used in production
  • Quoting with printers (both new titles and reprints), price negotiations
  • Communicating changes/corrections with printer
  • Scheduling with printers and internal team logging updates in database
  • Shipping production packages and files to Printers
  • Logistics and planning for truck or container delivery to publishers warehouse

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required
  • Minimum three years’ publishing and production experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Customer service/vendor management or similar experience preferred
  • Previous editing experience preferred
  • Management experience preferred
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles a plus
  • Experience with content management and/or learning management systems a plus
  • Extensive knowledge of offset printing, bindery, finishing, variable printing, paper, postal regulations and estimating.
  • Knowledge of software used for digital page make-up.
  • Familiarity with domestic and international printing and distribution methods.
  • Ability to relate to all levels of company and excellent customer skills.
  • Must be well organized, capable of multi-tasking and detail oriented.
  • Keeping production on schedule and on budget to hit published release dates as per the seasonally established goals for on-time production
  • Quickly identifying delays in production and finding solutions, keeping delays to less than two working days, and holding editors accountable for delays
  • Keep expenses under budget

 Copy Editor

Description: The copy editor copyedits and proofreads manuscripts, galleys, and final layout pages following the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) and house style guidelines. The copy editor will be responsible for reviewing between 50 and 100 books/products per season, with an average word count of 30,000 words per title.

Expectations:

  • Accountable for bringing books into technical and grammatical alignment with CMS and house style, clearly marking corrections using standard proofreaders’ marks or digital tools
  • Takes initiative for improving consistency and mechanics for books and catches and communicates design, layout, and production errors
  • Respects seasonal production schedule, keeping projects on schedule by identifying, communicating, and resolving delays
  • Collaborates with developmental editor and production editor to understand the specifics of each book
  • Adheres to internal checklists and takes initiative to create and maintain style sheets by book and by categoryAssists other teams by copyediting or proofreading promotional and other materials

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 5 years of professional copyediting experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with strong attention to detail, deep knowledge of CMS style, and expertise with proofreaders' marks
  • Experience with an editorial production environment and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work well as part of a team
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop
  • Previous experience in book publishing or media industry is desired

Broad interests; background in art; children’s books; craft; design; lifestyle; military history; mind, body, spirit; and other niche topics a plus
