Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (Atglen, PA) is a family-owned publisher with over 5,700 titles in print and a broad catalog of books, including non-fiction books on art, decorative arts, architecture, design, antiques, military history, maritime, photography, fashion, house and garden, food, history, crafts, woodworking, regional, and more. Located on the Schiffer Book Farm near the Chester/Lancaster county line, we are two miles from the Parkesburg station on Amtrak's Keystone Line.

 

                             

                               Production Manager

Description: Schiffer Publishing seeks a Production Manager whose responsibilities include the oversight of the end-to-end print production process as the liaison and first point of contact with printers and other vendors from initial specification requirements and pricing through the coordination of manufacturing and distribution to the publisher's warehouse. A typical day consists of meeting with the internal team (design, editorial) to understand the scope and production requirements of new and reprint projects, confirming materials and production specifications, creating production quotations, and distributing to multiple printers for pricing. Then compare pricing to meet budget, negotiate and finalize price, and use cost benefit analysis to determine the best source for the job. Coordinate scheduling with vendors, oversee file transfers, coordinate proofing and making corrections, insure integrity of design and creation, issue purchase orders, give final approval for print production, troubleshoot and problem solve issues, plan freight and logistics to deliver books to publisher's warehouse, and communicate with internal team and vendors regarding production stages and project status. This is an in office position to work directly with our internal team.

Expectations:

  • Manage the end-to-end production and printing process, from handling vendor relations and negotiations, pricing, troubleshooting, scheduling, finding cost-savings opportunities in the production supply chain, and ensuring high quality of our products.
  • Responsible for maintaining relationships with current suppliers, as well as qualifying new vendors.
  • Efficiently manage print production schedule to ensure projects meet release dates
  • Serve as final reviewer of materials, including QA of printers’ proofs, and other products as may be needed.
  • Handle all technical issues between editorial and design, send files, proofing, tracking of materials and proofs, request production templates, coordinate samples
  • Ensure all information is supplied to the Printer
  • Coordinate resolution of production issues between editorial, design, and printer
  • Production of quoting titles, special projects, price adjustments, data entry, specs and pricing
  • Selection and confirmation of materials and processes used in production
  • Quoting with printers (both new titles and reprints), price negotiations
  • Communicating changes/corrections with printer
  • Scheduling with printers and internal team logging updates in database
  • Shipping production packages and files to Printers
  • Logistics and planning for truck or container delivery to publishers warehouse

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required
  • Minimum three years’ publishing and production experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Customer service/vendor management or similar experience preferred
  • Previous editing experience preferred
  • Management experience preferred
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles a plus
  • Experience with content management and/or learning management systems a plus
  • Extensive knowledge of offset printing, bindery, finishing, variable printing, paper, postal regulations and estimating.
  • Knowledge of software used for digital page make-up.
  • Familiarity with domestic and international printing and distribution methods.
  • Ability to relate to all levels of company and excellent customer skills.
  • Must be well organized, capable of multi-tasking and detail oriented.
  • Keeping production on schedule and on budget to hit published release dates as per the seasonally established goals for on-time production
  • Quickly identifying delays in production and finding solutions, keeping delays to less than two working days, and holding editors accountable for delays
  • Keep expenses under budget
  • Experience working with Asian printers a plus

 

                               Graphic Designer

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for executing creative design solutions that strengthen brand equity and streamline the graphic design process for each assignment.
  • Development of graphics & layouts for assigned projects.
  • Staying abreast of technological advances in the field of graphic design and the latest design trends that will contribute to quality and efficiency.
  • A background in marketing, advertising, company branding preferred..
  • Ability to work effectively across inter-department project areas including:  Authors, Editorial, Sales and Marketing in order to execute the proper creative direction.
  • Responsible for preparing files for press and a working knowledge of offset printing

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with focus on Graphic or Communication Design
  • 3-5 years industry experience

Preferred Skills
         • Proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, and CameraRaw.
         • A strong working knowledge of the prepress process.
         • Ability to articulate ideas clearly & creatively
         • Ability to follow directions and process artistic and technical feedback resulting in creative design solutions.
         • Knowledge of print Media, Web design a plus.
         • eBook publication experience is desired
         • Develops and adheres to graphic standards and branding initiatives.


Additional Skills

         • Knowledgeable in Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre and Sigil.

  • Studio photography experience strongly desired

         • Experience in Web Development & maintenance a plus

The focus of this in-house position is to execute creative design solutions that both strengthen brand equity and match the intended market. Producing both high quality, and creative work based on established standards, guidelines and procedures is crucial. Precise, consistent work output is essential and requires patience and a willingness to handle and complete multiple tasks. The job environment is stable, based on a team mentality and well-defined processes. Job knowledge and competency is built through a structured workflow and positive, supportive coaching from management and peers. Communication with others is based on knowledge of repetitive job routines and procedures gained from sufficient on the job experience. The ability to work effectively across departments to execute the proper creative direction is critical to while reporting to the Creative Director.                                Regional Accounts Manager

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Working toward quarterly and annual sales targets by channel, account, region
  • Maintaining existing customers(“house accounts”) by presenting both frontlist and backlist titles as appropriate, conducting account analysis as required, and providing explanations of the current status quo of top 50 house accounts on a quarterly basis
  • Developing new customers in the assigned region, with a goal of expanding the territory dollar volume by a minimum of 5% annually
  • Providing regular feedback on the state of the market, promotions, and outreach as well as the geographic region to the Director and key personnel as required
  • Responding to inquiries from both internal and external contacts within 48 hours
  • Representing the company at trade shows and other events
  • Maintaining full and complete information on accounts and leads in the designated CRM program, including contact information and correspondence
  • Additional duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • College degree or equivalent and/or sales experience

  • Willing to learn about a wide variety of subject areas
  • Strong proficiency in general computer skills and standard CRM programs
  • Proven ability to build and maintain supportive and constructive relationships within and outside of the organization
  • Must be extremely organized an detail-oriented, and have superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with a minimum of day-to-day supervision
  • Must be willing and able to travel, and perform physical aspects of job
