The William Spratling Legacy”

Enjoy Sandy Baum’s beautiful collection of hundreds of images of silverwork designs by William Spratling.  This lovely collection features jewelry and other items from Taxco, Mexico as well as Spratling's work in developing a crafts program for Alaskan Natives.

Atglen P.A. — William Spratling’s, a U.S. educator, artistic impact caused a successful silver jewelry industry to arise in Taxco, Mexico during the 1930s.  Spratling’s original designs of beautiful silver items are examined in the more then 300 images through out this book.  The silverwork of William Spratling attracted the attention of the U.S. Interior Department and in 1945 he was invited to create a similar program for Alaskan Natives.  Thirty never before seen models from Alaska, lost for over 50 years, have been found and are now preserved at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.  These original designs, made in 1949 are presented along with Spratling’s original 1945 report to the Arts and Craft Board.  Also featured are the designs which inspired a new company to be formed in the late 1960s to carry on Spratling’s design work and legacy in Taxco.

Sandy Baum became interested in William Spratling’s career when he relocated to Mexico to study Mexican folk art first hand.  He has been a photographer and pilot for over 40 years.  His detail oriententation drives his photography to uncover items that might normally go unnoticed.  Sandy has written five other books on Mexico.  He currently lives in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Sandy’s book sells for $49.99 and can be purchased through the publisher at www.schifferbooks.com, your local bookseller, as well as various online retailers.
