“Pillin Pottery”

Jerry Kline and Mike Nickel catalog over 700 images, including the final vase ever produced, of the career of Polia Pillin’s art pottery through themes, subjects, and techniques.

Atglen P.A. — The beautiful and colorful art pottery of Polia Pillin, described by many as Picasso-esque, has gained a tremendous amount of attention in recent years.  This comprehensive catalog of Pillin’s art pottery from the 1940s until the late 1980s, features pieces, with values, of decorated and non-decorated pottery.  The range of subjects covered  by Pillin are presented here, including women, men, children, cats, nudes, equestrian scenes, circus performers, fish, birds, and creatures of unknown origin.  These themes, often presented with the qualities of Byzantine or folk iconography attributed to her Polish roots, adorn large bowls, plaques, chargers, vases of all shapes and sizes, and fine art employing oils and watercolors.   Complete with a history of Pillin’s career and a look at the techniques she used, this book is an essential read for art pottery collectors, dealers, and students.

Jerry Kline specializes in art pottery of all types, who can frequently be found on weekends at general line antique shows as well as art pottery venues.   Jerry is a Trustee for the “Pottery Lovers” society as well as an active member of the American Art Pottery Association.  Mike Nickel discovered his first piece of American art pottery in 1970 and has chased it ever since.  He is life member number one of the American Art Pottery Association.  Mike is an authority on Ohio and California art pottery produced from 1880 until the 1970s.
